Lupron (Leuprolide Acetate) Instructions
Lupron (leuprolide acetate) prevents ovulation in order to control the timing of
the egg retrieval and to synchronize the menstrual cycles of the Egg Donor and
Recipient (or Gestational Carrier).
Equipment:
Medication (liquid)
Insulin or Lupron syringe (usually with orange cap)
Alcohol pad
Gauze pad or tissue
Rubbing alcohol
Note: Your injection materials MUST be sterile and MAY NOT be reused.
To prepare medication:
1. Wipe off the top of the medication vial with the alcohol pad.
2. Remove the syringe from the package.
3. Draw air into the syringe by pulling the plunger out to the 10-unit mark.
(or 20 unit mark if your clinic prescribes 20 units)
4.Inject the 10 units of air into the medication vial.
5. Turn the vial upside down so that the needle is in the liquid and draw up the
prescribed amount. (10 or 20 Units)
Injection instructions:
1. Choose a preferred injection site such as:
back of upper arms, abdomen or anterior thighs (about 6-12 inches above the
knee).
2. Clean the injections site with rubbing alcohol and let dry.
3. Pinch the injection site with your non-dominant hand, to hold out skin for
injection.
4. Using your dominant hand, hold the syringe like a pencil, and with a quick,
dart-like motion, insert the syringe at a 45-degree angle, if possible. The
medication needs to be administered into the skin itself.
5. Slowly, steadily press the plunger until all the medication is injected. The
medication may burn as you depress the plunger; this is normal, but typically
Lupron causes little discomfort.
6. Withdraw the needle and discard the syringe.
7. Place a gauze pad or tissue over the injection site. If any bleeding occurs,
apply pressure to the site.
Things to consider:
- Your Lupron dosage may vary depending on your physician's preference.
The most common dosage is ten units daily. Some clinics start with 20
Units daily.
- Injections should be administered at approximately the same time each day.
- Expect to get your menses seven to 14 days after starting Lupron. Please
call your clinic's nurse on your first day of full flow. (You may typically
leave a message or page your nurse if it is a weekend or holiday.)
- Continue taking Lupron every morning or evening (if evenings are
instructed) until instructed to stop.
- You will be scheduled for an in-office baseline ultrasound and blood tests
at some point between days two and five of the "Lupron" period.
- You will call you on the afternoon of these tests with a Repronex/Gonal-
F®/Follistim (stimulation medication) start date.
- In most cases your Lupron dosage will be decreased by half, when you
start your stimulation injections.
If you have ANY questions about the following instructions or experience
unusual, bothersome side effects while taking Lupron, please contact your
fertility clinic.
