Jewish Fertility
Q. What is Jewish Surrogacy and Egg Donation?
A. Jewish Surrogacy and Egg Donation allows Jewish
Intended Parents to use the services of a surrogate or
egg donor to expand their family.
Q. Why do Jewish Intended Parents need this type of
service?
A. Most Jewish Intended Parents do not. However,
many Jewish Intended Parents wh oare of the Orthodox
faith, or who live in the country of Israel absolutely
need a Jewish Surrogate or egg donor, in order to follow
the Halakhic views of their Rabbi.
Q. What is the reason for these views?
A. These views are guidelines for Jewish Intended
Parents who want their child-to-be considered Jewish in
the eyes of the Jewish faith, without the need of
conversion. As well,a child born Jewish reaps the
benefits of being a Jewish citizen, in Israel. However,
each Rabbi may have their own rules about using a
surrogate or egg donor, based on their own individual
interpretations of Jewish law.
Q. Give me an example of rules that must be followed
by these Intended Parents.
A. Examples include:
1) A surrogate must be unmarried.
2) A surrogate must be Jewish based on her mother
being Jewish and her maternal grandmother being
Jewish.
3) The egg donor must be Jewish based on her mother
being Jewish, and her maternal grandmother being
Jewish.
Q. How can we prove a surrogate or egg donor is
Jewish?
A. It is helpful and sometimes important to have some
type of documentation that the surrogate or egg donor is
Jewish. Documents showing maiden names of the
surrogate's mother and grandmother, Bat Mitzvah
documentation, or the Donor's Parents' Ketubbah, can
be very helpful. For some Rabbis, documentation is not
needed.
Q. How easy is it to find a Jewish surrogate or egg
donor?
A. Unfortunately it is very difficult to find a Jewish
Surrogate or egg donor. The demand is much higher
than the supply. It can take many months to find a
Jewish surrogate if not longer. It is much easier to find a
Jewish egg donor, but again the demand is much greater
than the supply.
Q. How can Fertility Alternatives, Inc. help?
A. Fertility Alternatives specializes in Jewish matches. It
does take time to find the right Jewish surrogate or egg
donor, however, being Jewish myself, and experiencing
first hand what it is like to be surrogate and egg donor, I
know just the right places to look.
It is important to me to find more Jewish women out
there who want to help infertile couples and individuals.
It is a Mitzvah.
